Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Strong Start?

A: Strong Start is a "Parent Leadership Training" similar to the Oregon Partners in Policymaking program in the past. The goal is to equip parents with the tools they need to effectively advocate not only for their own child, but to create lasting changes to their communities for everyone.

Q: What kind of time commitment is required?

A: The Strong Start Training is a total of 20 hours spent together. We are currently asking families to fill out a survey to determine how we divide that time. Typically it is scheduled as two weekends about a month apart. For the 2018 class we are looking at dates in March/April/May. If you are interested in participating please fill out our survey here so we can take your feedback into account!

Q: What about the homework?

A: The homework is important! It has been distilled as much as possible. Before the first class:
  • You will select a book from a list we will provide, read it and choose 10 quotes which you will email to us.
  • You will email us a link to an inspiring or informative video on disability, social justice, leadership or community from Youtube, TED or TEDx talks. (under 15 minutes in length if possible)
  • You will need to watch two online trainings, one regarding IEPs and one regarding ISPs. Links will be provided.
  • You will put together a 3-5 minute presentation to tell the class your story. (With either a poster, video/slideshow or some other visual support)
  • You will Schedule visits with 3 local/state leaders for after the conclusion of the class. (We can assist you if you need help identifying possible contacts. Don't worry! The training will prepare you for these meetings!)
